One of the aspects of spirituality which is misunderstood by many is the concept of Karma . With the ‘Banksters’ and war mongers, we have seen in recent years, I come across articles which say they will have to suffer the consequences of Karma . In many cases, this comes from a vengeful mind set which believes the focus of their dislike should be punished .
This view of Karma says what you put out will be returned to you but I don’t see Karma in the same light . Firstly, it could be seen as the act of punishment by a vengeful God who wishes to enact retribution . Now, even though I sometimes feel the same way about the current World I know that the real ‘God’ is incapable of thoughts and acts of vengeance . It is our ego projecting its own belief system onto God and in reality, there is no Karmic retribution .
The second reason why I don’t think this view of Karma is accurate is more practical . Our ego tells us the physical world is real but it is just an illusion . Nothing is really happening – the world is just our imagination come to life . So why would God set up a vengeful system when nothing has really happened .
I believe Karma is more to do with our belief system rather than some force outside of ourself . I think it is closer to this description of Karma by Deepak Chopra :
A very simple way to interpret karma is that it is conditioned response, the past influencing the circumstances of the present as well as our tendencies to act in conditioned patterns of behavior. We become bundles of conditioned reflexes constantly triggered by people and circumstances into predicted outcomes. Hence karma is considered to be a prison, a bondage. The goal of the spiritual journey is to escape the prison of karma and bring about the true response of our soul which is creativity .
Karma could be seen as a similar concept to Hell . When asked why guilty individuals don’t suffer Karma, the guru replies they will experience their fate in future lifetimes, which sounds remarkably similar to the Christian concept of Hell . But, in reality, there is no future and so, how could Karma be experienced ?
Karma is the result of our mind set which causes the physical experiences in our lives . We believe in Death, so we appear to die . We believe the phyical world is real, so we see a world of physical objects and so on . The World is just a thought .
There are no guilty offences we have committed and therefore, there is no need for vengeance or punishment even if God/Life/Universe wanted to enact retribution . It is only the mind of the human ego which believes in such concepts . We are Innocence and that cannot be changed .
